While we all practice social distancing and limiting our interactions, there are still plenty of things to do during your short visit in the area. These moments alone are a great opportunity to understand what’s important to us and practice some self-reflection.

A Walk Around the Neighbourhood

Now would be the perfect time for a short walk around the neighbourhood. Even if it’s just around the block. With phones in our pockets, it’s the perfect opportunity to take Mother Nature in as she is.  If it’s sunny, notice the brightness of everything, or if it’s cloudy notice how vivid all the colours are around. Experience the fresh air and be sure to take in a few deep breaths.

You’ll notice so much more and perhaps you’ll find a new appreciation for your environment.

Give Space to Self Reflection

Be it on your walk, or another time while you’re alone; during this time would also be a perfect opportunity to reflect on many aspects of life.  This could come in the form of rediscovering your passions or adjusting your personal and professional goals or even evaluating a new sense of what’s important to you.

Spend Time with Family

If you’re taking extra precautions and self-isolating, you don’t have to do it alone. Now’s the time to spend that with family. Everyone spends so much time at work, or socializing with friends, or even being locked into our electronic devices. Now is time to put our phones down and enjoy the memories we have and can make with our loved ones.  Pull out a board game, the photo album, or even the karaoke machine. Isolation does not need to be boring.

Kids Help Phone's Walk So Kids Can Talk

Note: This is assuming COVID-19 precautions are lifted by this date. A reminder to practice good hygiene and proper social distancing during these times.

For the past 30 years, Kids Help Phone has been helping young people who are suffering either emotionally, mentally and physically, by showing them their support through text or phone. On Sunday May 3rd, come show your support for Kids Help Phone and join in on the Kids Help Phone's Walk So Kids Can Talk 5K walk. You can either sign up as an individual or as a team with family, friends or co-workers.

Should you be staying with family because to choose the  EconoLodge Choice Hotels South Calgary. You can practice your social distancing by putting your feet up and reading a book or perhaps brush up on your isolation by drawing yourself a nice long bath. Make your reservations today!

Alberta is well known for its long drawn-out winters, and piles of snow, but that sure doesn’t stop anyone from venturing out to the great outdoors to take in the fresh crisp air. It also doesn’t stop anyone from getting out in below-zero temperatures to look out for fun. Here are two great events that prove snow is not a deterrent to fun for Albertans, nor should it be for visitors either.

Starlight Dinner

Imagine taking a chairlift ride up 7,000 feet, and sitting down for a sublime dinner at the Cliffhouse Bistro, where you'll be surrounded by the charm of mid-century modern decor and windows offering clear unobstructed views over Banff and a panoramic sighting of the majestic Mount Rundle. On February 22 and March 7, you won't have to imagine savouring a fine five-course meal coupled with refined wine pairings at this mountain-top restaurant. Your Starlight Dinner will be prepared by none other than Chef Morne, presenting an Alpine-inspired menu that will surely impress. Enjoy soft and soothing entertainment provided by Alana J. Brown while you linger by the warm fireplace along with other guests. The Cliffhouse is ready to welcome you at 6:00 pm with dinner commencing at 6:30 pm. With stunning and ethereal views, paired with divine cuisine, this will be an experience to remember!

The Hot Dogger

The most epic ski resort party of the season, The Hot Dogger is going down on February 8th! Once you've had your fill of the Rocky Mountains, and the sun has set a glowing light on the grounds, make your way to the Lodge of Ten peaks and start dancing the night away. Dinner and a movie is a fun way to spend some time out, but if you’re tired of the standard activities and are looking for something with a bit of a twist, there are plenty of interesting events coming up in the city.

Date Night: Cooking & Yoga

Happening on December 13 from 6:30 to 9:30 at YW Calgary Community Spaces, this event combines two activities that you might not expect to see together. If you’re looking for a fun couples activity that puts a twist on your regular dinner date, then this may be it. The first portion of the evening will be led by Yoga by Emma. Work up an appetite with some couples yoga and then transition into the second part of the event with a casual cooking class creating a three course meal. No experience is necessary for either activity. The event costs $95 per person and you must register in pairs. This event is for those age 18 and up.

Paint with Alpacas

Paint nights have become quite popular in recent years, but painting with alpacas may not be something you’ve ever considered. Come out and paint some pottery pieces and pet some adorably fuzzy alpacas. Running from 10am to 12pm on December 14 at Color Me Mine Cafe, this unique event is sure to be a crowd pleaser. All ages are welcome. The cost is $15 per person and includes paints, studio time, glazing, firing, the use of stencils, a beverage (hot chocolate for the kids and tea or coffee for the adults), and some super satisfying alpaca time.

Cooking Basics for Young Adults

If you’re a young person looking to pick up some skills in the kitchen, then you’re in luck. This 2 hour event, which is set to take place on December 28 from 12pm to 2pm at South Health Campus Wellness Kitchen, will teach young people the basics of cooking so they can feel more confident in their culinary abilities. Batch cooking and knife skills will be emphasized. Attendees can expect to learn how to create some healthy meals that will keep them going during those crazy study sessions. Canada, eh? The land of beavers and wintery wonders.  Canadians, and specifically those in Calgary have a distinct way to celebrate their Christmas/Holidays.  The spirit of the winter holidays is alive and doing well in cities like Calgary. To see how this manifests, you have to check out the Canadian way with these events:

Alberta Ballet: The Nutcracker

On December 14-16 (Friday to Sunday) and December 20-24 (Thursday to Monday), join the Alberta Ballet in The Nutcracker.  This 2-hour show has various times (and Saturday and Sunday matinees) , so it’s best to check out the website.  The ballet is accompanied by the CAlgary Philharmonic Orchestra at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. Tickets range from $41 to $145. This show holds a wonderful tale, but it is also a great way to bring the family and share in a Canadian way of enjoying Christmas.

Vancouver Canucks vs. Calgary Flames

There is nothing more Canadian than hockey rivalry. And there is something about the winter months that make hockey so much more special; perhaps it reminds us of frozen lakes and rivers, and playing on the neighbourhood ice. Nonetheless our rivalry with our western neighbours is nothing short of symbolic of Canada. A good game of hockey can’t anyone wrong.  Join several thousand other people for a game at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday, December 29, 2018. Game starts at 8 PM!

Once Upon a Christmas…

Start November 24 through to December 23, 2018, Heritage Park in Calgary transform into Calgary’s own little area for Christmas festivities. While these Saturdays and Sundays are an annual occurrence, a couple things are new this year. These include performances by the Acclamation Handbell Choir, an opportunity to pet the holiday horses, and the Calgary Carvers exhibit their art of woodworking. Horse-drawn sleighs and carriages? Come on, you cannot miss out!

Christmas can be tiring, especially if you are visiting from out of town.  We’ve got your rest, relaxation and sleep covered. The Econo Lodge in Calgary is just minutes away from everything, and can give you great value for your dollar.  If that isn’t enough, then consider the benefits of having a pool in-house, too!

They rose to fame in the early 1990s, their sound experimenting with grunge, psychedelic rock, and classic rock, with hits like “Plush” and “Creep.” Jeff Gutt has taken on lead vocals in replace of the late original frontman Scott Weiland and his first replacement, the late Chester Bennington. The band’s newest album, STP, was released late last year, to positive reviews.
